Bishop Fintan Gavin has written to all the school pupils who are due to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation and to receive their First Holy Communion along with those awaiting Confirmation.

In letters sent to parents and children through the local schools, Bishop Fintan says he knows “how disappointed you feel that we will not be able to celebrate on the date that was originally planned”.

When the Covid-19 restrictions are lifted and “we are told that it is safe to do so, we look forward to celebrating this special occasion with you,” the bishop said.

Addressing the pupils directly, he asked them to pray with their families, “remembering those who are sick, all who are caring for them and all who are working so hard to keep us safe.”

Confirmation ceremonies were celebrated in the diocese until March 12th when schools were closed by government directive.

The majority of First Holy Communion Masses are usually held in May and are preceded in previous months by First Penance.

“We are not in a position at this time to say when,” Bishop Fintan says, “but rest assured that you will have the opportunity to celebrate your special day when it is safe for us all to gather again.”
