Srs. Aloysius Herr and Ann (Mgt. Mary) Coughlan

During March 2014 two of our Sisters of Mercy, who had lived and worked in Schull for many years, died.

Sr. Ann, known locally as Mgt. Mary, died in the Mercy Hospital, Cork, on March 10th, having battled long and patiently with leukaemia.  She was a native of Dunmanway.  Ann came to Schull from Clonakilty in 1985.  She was the first chaplain in Schull Community College and during her ten years working in the College she also became Deputy Principal.  Ann was a dedicated, hard worker who gave fully of herself to whatever project she had in hand. She certainly had her students and the welfare of the College fully at heart, and loved working there.  She was always ready for a good laugh and game of cards.  As a Sister of Mercy she was totally committed and worked hard in administration for many years.  May her lively, loyal soul rest in peace.

Sr. Aloysius, known locally as Sr. Al, died in Deerpark Nursing Home, Bantry, on March 14th.  Al was a native of Fedamore, Co. Limerick. She became a Sr. of  Mercy in Bantry Convent and, in early years as a Sr, spent a short while in Schull Convent.  She trained as a nurse and was one of the brave pioneering Sisters who went to Peru in 1966. Her stories of Peru were wonderful.  On returning to Bantry she nursed in the hospital there for many years, and on retirement she came to Schull in 1991.  She loved her work with the Active Retirement Group and also enjoyed visiting people in their homes. She, too, was a totally committed Sr. of Mercy, always ready for a good laugh and story.  She never grumbled when her sight failed some years ago, but remained calm through all her illness.  May her gentle, prayerful soul rest in peace.
